What is the recovery process like after oral rehabilitation?

Tabla de contenido

Oral rehabilitation is the recommended treatment for mouths that are in poor condition and require a very planned and meticulous intervention. Our clinic specializes in this type of treatment and if you have undergone rehabilitation, you will be interested in knowing what the recovery process will be like and what advice we can give you.

Recovery after oral rehabilitation

Leaving aside whether your rehabilitation has been more or less extensive, you must take into account that the postoperative period after surgery will be more or less similar. It is very important to follow the advice we will give you below, but you have to bear in mind that the success or failure of your rehabilitation will depend largely on you.

In our clinic, we use computer-guided surgery, which allows us to plan the intervention virtually, minimizing damage to the soft tissues and making the postoperative period less painful. Thanks to this type of advanced surgery -and the high quality of our implants- we are able to carry out dental rehabilitation in an optimal way, achieving perfect aesthetics and function for your mouth.

Once at home, and once the effects of the anesthesia have worn off, you will need to follow the advice we will give you.

Tips after oral rehabilitation

The first thing is to follow the dentist’s instructions regarding the recommended medications. You may have to take antibiotics and, most likely, painkillers to avoid the discomfort of a surgical intervention. Regardless of the type of anesthesia you needed, the general recommendation is not to drive or operate machinery, not to drink alcohol until the day after the intervention, and not to engage in intense physical exertion for 7-10 days.

It will help a lot to reduce possible swelling by applying ice to the area for 6 to 8 hours after the intervention and keeping your head in an elevated position, for example using pillows when sleeping. This will prevent edema.

If you have been given stitches, you will need to return to the dentist the following week or after ten days to have them removed.

During this time, it is very important not to smoke, as it increases the risk of infections and the healing process will be slow or deficient. If you are a smoker, think of oral rehabilitation as a good opportunity to distance yourself from this habit. Our advice is that before undergoing dental treatment, you should avoid smoking for at least one month, as this will promote blood circulation throughout the body.

In the first 24 hours after the surgical intervention, you will not be able to rinse your mouth, as you could stop the healing process.

After this time, you can rinse your mouth with salt water and gradually resume oral hygiene. It should be done with a very soft brush and without pressing too hard. It is not advisable to skip brushing your teeth during the postoperative recovery time after meals, especially in the areas of the mouth that have not undergone intervention, as this will minimize the risk of infection.

Regarding nutrition, our advice is to opt for a soft diet at room temperature, especially in the first few days, and drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks as much as possible.

Also, keep in mind that it will take time to place the definitive prostheses, during which you will have to maintain a series of care that keeps your oral cavity as aseptic as possible. Attend the scheduled visits with your dentist.

What to do if you bleed or experience swelling after oral rehabilitation?

This is natural in the first few days, and furthermore, swelling will be more intense 48 hours after the procedure. You may feel discomfort when opening your mouth and have general discomfort or a slight fever. Typically, the swelling will disappear within 4 days.

Bleeding is also normal, and you can stop it by folding a gauze and placing it over the affected area. You should apply some pressure with your teeth to create a clot. Usually, it will form in 30 minutes. If after an hour the bleeding does not stop, contact your dentist.
