We all know that dental check-ups are essential to maintain a healthy mouth, but the type of check-up that the dentist will perform will change according to the patient’s age.
Do you want to know which pathologies dentists can detect at each stage of our life with a simple dental check-up?
It can be very useful, for you and your family too. Keep reading!
Regular check-ups
Regular dental check-ups in adults should generally be done once a year. They usually include a dental cleaning to remove bacterial plaque and tartar if present. The dentist will take into account if the patient is a smoker, has diabetes, has a weakened immune system, has any type of periodontal disease, sensitive teeth, etc.
Regarding check-ups in children, we must distinguish between the first visit we make to the dentist and subsequent check-ups.
Between the first and third year of our child’s life, we should take them to their first dental visit. In this visit, the dentist teaches parents how to take care of their child’s oral health, teaching them how to brush their teeth, for example.
This first visit is very important for the future relationship of children with dentists, and much more emphasis is placed on the comfort and mood of the young patient than on the medical check-up itself, but this does not mean that the dentist does not control the state of the baby’s mouth. It is about your child gaining confidence in the dentist so that in the future they are not afraid to go to the dental clinic. Therefore, the earlier you take your child to the dentist, the better.
From the age of 6 or 7, the dentist will be responsible for teaching your children to brush their teeth on their own and take care of their dental hygiene. The frequency of visits from this age onwards will depend on whether the child needs any type of treatment, such as orthodontics. At ZENIT CLINIC we have a dedicated space for these patients, it is ZENIT KIDS, our proposal for the little ones and their families to feel comfortable, safe, and heard.
So, what are the pathologies that can be detected with periodic check-ups?
Let’s take a look at them one by one:
- BRUXISM
It is a very common pathology, as around 70% of the population suffers from it, including children. This pathology is the cause of tooth sensitivity, among other things.
Your dentist will most likely take measurements to make a splint, but they may also advise you to make an appointment with your doctor to control your stress or anxiety.
- MALOCCLUSIONS, BOTTLE CARIES, NARROW PALATE
These are the typical diseases that a dentist can detect in the first check-ups of young children. We have already talked about bottle caries, but your pediatric dentist can also discover that your child has a narrow palate or perform preventive treatment, such as interceptive orthodontics, to correct malocclusions.
If your child sucks their thumb or cannot part with their pacifier, they may be causing some kind of deformation themselves. The dentist can give you some tips to help them get through this stage.
Remember that the most important thing is to put yourself in good hands, regardless of the age of each patient. At Zenit Clinic, we are ready to serve the whole family, and, in addition, we are specialists in advanced dental implantology and orthodontics.

- DRY MOUTH, BAD BREATH, INFLAMMATIONS
These pathologies are more common in elderly people and pregnant women, as they rarely appear in adults who have proper oral hygiene.
Halitosis can be a sign that you suffer from periodontal disease, consult with your dentist if this is your case.

Here is one of the reasons why you cannot miss your dental check-up. Your dentist can detect oral cancer at a glance. - CARIES
Cavities are the most common pathology for all ages. A cavity seen in time by your dentist in a simple check-up will save you many problems. Remember to inform your dentist if you feel any discomfort in a specific tooth, although you can be assured that they will examine your entire mouth. If they suspect you have a cavity that is not visible to the naked eye, they will have to take an X-ray.
There are two causes of cavities: sugar and poor oral hygiene. Try not to let your children overuse sugar!
There is another type of cavities that affect babies. They are called bottle caries and can even appear in 6-month-old babies due to the exposure of the child to sugary liquids, such as breast milk or formula or juices. Try not to let your baby fall asleep with the bottle in their mouth!
- GUM DISEASE OR PERIODONTAL DISEASE
Youth are the ones who usually suffer from gum disease, but it is a disease that affects many adults and seniors. Pregnant women can also suffer from it, as during pregnancy the oral mucosa is altered and this can cause gum inflammation.
During the routine check-up, the dentist will check if the gums are inflamed or receding, from which you may suffer from gingivitis – the first phase of periodontal disease – or periodontitis. Periodontitis can be more or less severe, but it is very important that a dentist can detect it in time, regardless of your age.
