A dental implant is a titanium microscrew that is placed inside the socket to subsequently hold a ceramic dental piece fixedly.
Once the implant and the dental piece are placed, the patient can chew and speak normally, as if they had not lost their natural tooth.

In general, treatment with dental implants is safe and long-lasting. Most studies confirm that 91% of dental implants remain problem-free for 30 or 40 years in the patient’s mouth as long as they attend their check-ups and maintain good oral health habits.
However, in some cases, the dental implant may be affected by an infection.
What are the symptoms of an infection in the implant?
How to detect it?
By paying attention to the following symptoms:
- Swelling and redness of the gums.
- Discharge of pus.
- Unpleasant taste or odor.
- Exposure of part of the implant.
- Pain around the implant.
- Mobility of the implant in more advanced cases.
Mucositis and peri-implantitis
Infections of the maxillary bone are the most important cause of bone loss due to the action of bacteria inside the mouth.
Therefore, oral hygiene and regular plaque control are essential to prevent any infections in the implant in the medium and long term.
If oral hygiene and plaque control are inadequate, and especially if other factors such as genetics, diabetes, smoking, drug treatments, or vitamin D deficiency come into play, two adverse situations may occur:
1. Peri-implant mucositis
It is defined as the reversible process of inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding the implant.
Mucositis and Peri-Implantitis
Infections in the maxillary bone are the leading cause of bone loss due to bacterial action inside the mouth. Therefore, oral hygiene and regular plaque control are fundamental to prevent infections in dental implants in the medium and long term.
If oral hygiene and plaque control are not adequate, and especially if other factors such as genetics, diabetes, smoking, medication, or vitamin D deficiency come together, two adverse situations can occur:
1. Peri-implant Mucositis
Peri-implant mucositis is defined as the process of reversible inflammation of the soft tissues surrounding the implant.
2. Peri-Implantitis
The main cause of peri-implantitis is the accumulation of bacterial plaque between teeth and gums. If mucositis is not controlled, it can lead to the loss of bone tissue and in the long term, the loss of the implant.
In Zenit Clinic, we work with titanium implants, and the treatment (physical and chemical) of their surface and the reliability of their attachments to manufacture the prosthesis make the difference.
There is a wide variety of dental implants on the market. However, very few have enough scientific documentation in the long term and in the different clinical situations that a patient may demand.
At Zenit Clinic, we know the importance of the quality of surgical material for the success of the treatment.
